First term

Third placement in a midwifery practice. In defined situations, supervision is indirect. Students care for an assigned caseload, including situations with complications. Problem-based tutorials focus on midwifery roles and responsibilities in highly complex and urgent situations.

Maternal & Newborn Pathology is the third clinical midwifery course and includes theoretical and practice components. The focus is on midwifery management and includes the recognition and understanding of abnormal situations. Students will learn the signs and symptoms of pathologic conditions of the mother and newborn infant and the appropriate role of the midwife in detecting and managing these problems. Within the clinical placement the student will provide increasingly independent care and will initiate consultation and referral when appropriate. Students will help to manage urgent or emergency situations.

Second term

Final placement in a midwifery practice. Supervision is increasingly indirect. Students formulate and provide care to an entire caseload of women. Tutorials and workshops include case review, preparation for registration and establishing a practice in Ontario.

The midwifery Clerkship is the final clinical placement before graduation. In this placement, students demonstrate independent decision-making and apply the full range of their academic knowledge to professional practice. Students continue to gain technical expertise and exposure to a variety of clinical situations. Students must demonstrate achievement of the core competencies of a midwife at the entry-to-practice level, including the ability to establish successful interprofessional relationships. Students must demonstrate an understanding of the health care system and the legal, ethical and professional responsibilities of a midwife. Students will participate in selected aspects of the administration of a midwifery practice group to acquaint themselves with the business aspects of practice operation. Through systematic review of care management, students will demonstrate skills in evaluation and continuous quality improvement in midwifery care.
