Admission Requirements & How to Apply

APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED FOR FALL 2024 CONSIDERATION

All applicants for 2024 must submit a response to the Identity and Admission Survey 2024 by February 1, 2024

All applicants for 2024 must register for and complete the Casper Assessment on one of the three dates offered:

November 2, 2023;

December 5, 2023;

or January 18, 2024

*The Midwifery Education Program advises all applicants to complete their assessments in November or December and not use the final test date as their first option. Wherever possible, plan to leave the final test date as a back-up option if you are unable to complete an assessment in November or December. There will be no option to complete a Casper assessment for Midwifery admission eligibility after January 18, 2024.

*****

Please choose the option below that best describes your highest level of education attended or other listed identifier.

For admissions purposes, university is considered a higher level of education than college. Therefore, if you are currently enrolled in college but you have attended university in the past, you would choose “university.” If you are unsure of which category you would choose, please contact midwifery@mcmaster.ca

Note: There shall be no automatic student transfer process between university sites within the Ontario Midwifery Education Program consortium (or between midwifery programs across Canada). Prospective students are strongly encouraged to carefully consider where they apply and accept an offer of admission.

We understand that Indigenous learners may face specific barriers when applying to higher education; therefore, if the minimum academic criteria are met and the applicant meets the requirements through the self-identification application, then the applicant will be offered an interview at our by-selection Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Assistance in preparing for the interview day is available through the Indigenous Student Health Sciences Office https://ishs.mcmaster.ca/services/recruitment.

More student support and services are available through the Indigenous Health Learning Lodge and Indigenous Student Services.

The Midwifery Education Program strives to be a supportive and inclusive community.  With an understanding that learners who are Black can face specific biases, barriers or challenges during the admissions process and when pursuing higher education, we offer a facilitated admissions stream for applicants who self-identify as Black (Facilitated Black Admission Process aka. FBAP). Our aim is to offer a process that will remove barriers and facilitate equitable access during each step of the admissions cycle. Applicants wishing to apply through this admission stream indicate that they wish to opt-in to this process when they complete the Supplementary Application Online Survey in addition to McMaster University and program specific application requirements.

Enrolment in the Midwifery Education Program is limited. Admission into the Midwifery Education Program is by selection and reserved for candidates who meet all requirements and who satisfy the academic regulations of the university. Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. It is recommended that applicants have completed at least one year of university prior to applying. The deadline for applications is January 15 and deadline for all official transcripts is February 1 each year for the following September intake. Documents received after February 1 will not be considered. Please note that all required courses must be completed, with final grades available on any and all official transcripts at the time of application (excluding current Secondary School students). All official transcripts must be submitted. All documents submitted with the application become property of the university. The Midwifery Education Program is a collaborative venture shared by McMaster and Toronto Metropolitan University.

Expandable List

The Midwifery Education Program admits a select number of applicants each Fall, so the admission process is very competitive. The admission requirements stated for eligibility are minimum requirements. Preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications. The average standing required for admission in recent years has been in the high 90% to mid 80% range The selection process is comprised of two phases:

Phase 1: Assessment of Academic Eligibility / Achievement and Supplementary Application Review

  • Review of all applications for completeness and to determine academic eligibility
  • Based on a combination of academic achievement and supplementary application data (i.e. Casper assessment results), top-ranking applicants will be invited to the interview in Phase 2
  • Applicants must be successful in phase one to be considered in phase two

Phase 2: Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

  • The MMI consists of a series of questions used to assess non-cognitive qualities including cultural sensitivity, maturity, teamwork, empathy, reliability and communication skills. Applicants are assessed based on their verbal and written responses to interview questions and how they conduct themselves. Each applicant will complete up to 10 timed interview questions in a sequential order.
  • Offers of admission will be made to the top ranking applicants based on the assessment of their MMI scores.
  • Offers based on interim grades will be conditional upon maintaining satisfactory performance on final grades.

If an unsuccessful applicant or an applicant that refuses their offer of admission wishes to reapply to the Midwifery Education Program, a new application, including transcripts must be submitted the following year.
